Stew Settle - Mr Reliable

The Mayne Reserve Grade’s Mr Reliable Stew Settle will run out this Saturday at the Den for his 150th game in the Two’s, a very rare feat for this level of football and not previously achieved this century.

A former Mayne Junior, Stew started his football journey in Auskick and but for a few years playing rugby for Brothers, he has been a lifelong Tiger. Stew played his 100th Reserve Grade game for the Tigers in 2019 to be only the sixth player to achieve this milestone this Century highlighting his resilience and dedication. He becomes the first this century to record 150 games. He has also lined up for eleven senior games over his journey.

One of the most reliable defenders the club has been fortunate to have in it’s ranks, Stew might be considered unlucky not to have played a lot more senior games but for the plethora of high quality defenders that the club has been able to field during his time at the club. A lot of individuals might have been deterred by this situation but Stew’s loyalty to the Tigers has seen him regarded as one of the most loved club men dedicating himself as a leader of the Reserve Grade over this extraordinary period.

He is one of the most respected Reserve Grade players being elected Reserve Grade Captain in 2018, 2020, 2021, 2022 and 2023. He is also highly decorated with Premierships in 2015, 2016, 2019 and 2020 followed by Grand Final appearances in 2021 and 2022, a truly remarkable effort.

In further recognition of the regard with which he is held by his peers, he was judged the Peter Ives Player’s Player for the Reserve Grade in 2020 and 2021.

It is well known that opposition club’s hold him in high regard with his consistent ability to read the play, sweep and intercept attacking raids and in turn set the Tigers up for attack. His reliable marking and kicking has been the cornerstone of the Tigers ability to make the Reserve Grade finals in eight of the last nine years.

Furthermore, he has nurtured many young players over his time and continues to be a reliable leader and mentor for the club.

The Mayne Tigers thanks Stew for his wonderful service over this long period and wishes him all the very best when he runs out this Saturday.
