In a very sad period the Mayne Football Club would like to acknowledge the passing of another Mayne Tiger in former Past Player Barry Edgley who forged a strong career with the Tigers from Juniors all the way to the Senior Grade. Barry passed away recently at the age of 73 after a short battle with cancer.
Barry is remembered by team mates from long ago who have been mates for their entire lives with friendships forged as young footballers in Black and Gold Stripes. Commencing his footy in a group coached by Tiger greats Barry Coghill and Brian Warlow, he had the right start with strong mentors to go all the way as many of them did.
He played all his junior footy with the Tigers from Under 11's through the 1960's, going on to play seniors in 1969, 1970 and 1971 until a knee reconstruction in 1971 ended his playing days. An injury such as this would be managed today and his career could have extended for many more years such was his talent but not in 1971.
Team mate and lifelong friend Graham McColm tells us he was a great bloke who he grew up with along with other Mayne Tigers of that era, including Paul Meakin, Tyrone Stewart, Greg Vine, Col Cresser, Peter Cubis and Rod Judd to name a few. It was a halcyon period for the Mayne Tigers where only the very best made it to first grade.
All of these men remain friends to this day and regularly come together for social occasions including a commemorative lunch last year after the passing of their old coach Barry Coghill. It is important that we recognise Barry for his time in Black and Gold and extend our sympathy to his family and friends at this time.
Barry’s funeral and a celebration of his life will be held on Monday 28th November 2022 commencing at 9.30am at Traditional Funerals, Morayfield Road Burpengary.
