Vale Greg Fulton

The Mayne Football Club would like to acknowledge the passing of 1982 Premiership player Greg Fulton who left us this morning after a long battle with cancer.

A product of the Vermont Football Club in Melbourne, Greg was a tall upright half back flanker who joined the Tigers in 1981 and went on to be an important member of the 1982 Premiership team. He was always a startup selection such was his ability, consistency and resilience who played for the club for a period of five years including the losing 1985 Grand Final.

He had tried his hand in most jurisdictions including Victoria, WA, SA and Tasmania where he played for Glenorchy. He controversially missed selection in the senior team but starred in their Reserves Premiership.

In addition to his football prowess, he is revered by all his team mates and friends at the club as an absolute gentleman and the best of friends.

He is remembered for his love of the social side of footy life with friends recalling his part in a mock royal wedding at the Tigers Clubhouse in 1981 in which he portrayed Prince Charles to perfection where he married a 200cm bearded Steve “Froggy” Thompson starring as Lady Di with the nuptials officiated by the Very Reverand Mick Nolan.

A man of many talents, he will also be fondly remembered as part of a group of Mayne players led by Greg’s lifelong best mate Frank Clarke who would annually perform Christmas Carols at a nursing home in the Bellbowrie area. It was an annual event enjoyed by the players and loved by the residents.

There was a time where he was a Collingwood supporter but after settling in Queensland he got on board with the Lions and enjoyed attending all their matches as well as their memorable premierships.

Greg was able to join in the 2024 Centenary celebrations at the Mayne Tigers Hall of Fame night and the associated activities over that weekend where he enjoyed catch ups with many of his Tiger team mates and friends.

Greg had a love of horses where he enjoyed a hobby of ownership with his two most successful horses being The Face and Harry’s Yacht which he followed through Brisbane and Melbourne.

He battled through his cancer journey over an incredible thirteen years with tenacity and dignity with the Mater Hospital nurses in awe of his strength.

There will be a celebration of Greg’s many storied life at the Kedron Wavell RSL with details to be provided as soon as possible.
