Gus Shaw - the high flyer

In a remarkable year of milestones, the Tigers are very pleased to announce that Gus Shaw will play his 100th Reserve Grade game this Saturday.

Gus has been a Tiger since his time in Auskick at the Mayne Juniors playing all the way through to the Colts programme and ultimately making his senior debut in 2019.

While Gus made his senior debut in 2019, he was also a key member of the winning reserve grade premiership under coach Josh Duffy. It was a win even the most one eyed Tigers did not expect to achieve, but win they did against a star studded Noosa outfit. It was the kind of initiation to senior football that any young player dreams of, but there was a number of retirements from that team following the grand final. A new much younger cohort suited up for the reserves in 2020 under coach Corey Massingham and once again the team saluted beating the Noosa Tigers in a nailbiter for a back to back premiership with Gus one of the leaders of a group of young men that had been playing together for many years. Corey has previously coached a large proportion of the same group to an under 15 premiership a few short years prior.

The Tigers reserves have played in every finals series since 2014 and so it continued for Gus and his group. He unfortunately missed the 2023 premiership with injury but captained the Centenary Reserve Grade Premiership in 2024 and was awarded the Best on Ground in the Grand Final for his impressive performance in the ruck. He also was awarded the 2024 Runner Up Best and Fairest capping off a stellar year.

While Gus is a tall wiry sort, he has a prodigious leap and plays with considerable courage against some of the biggest bodies in the game. He has been a consistent performer in the ruck for the Reserves over this extended period but has also been called upon to play nineteen senior games. It is no small feat to reach this milestone and it rarely comes without some adversity along the way. Gus has battled injury missing some extended periods which makes this an even more celebrated achievement.

He is a proud member of the hard working Shaw family with his brother Seb also having played all his footy at the Tigers while his parents Campbell and Julie have been members of the Junior and Senior committees along the way. Gus and Seb have followed in their parent’s footsteps, both taking on important off field roles. In addition to performing numerous volunteer roles, Gus has been an Assistant Coach for the Tigers Women’s team for the last few years and is a much loved club person from top to bottom. He shared the Jack Kennedy Club Person of the Year with Daniel Schmidt in 2024 and the Volunteer Team Person of the Year with Kyle Henry in 2025.

The Tigers congratulates Gus on the achieving this significant milestone and looks forward to seeing him continue on for many years to come.
