It was a gala night at Tattersalls for the 2024 Mayne Tigers Awards presentation with the club still floating on air after the extraordinary success of last weekend. The talk of the night was of course the two senior premierships achieved in the club’s centenary year last Saturday.
The success had been well and truly celebrated over the last week but last night was a chance for the club to formerly reflect and thank all the people who had made the year’s successes possible.
President Campbell Shaw opened the evening with a comprehensive reflection on the year taking into account all the key people at every level of the club. Campbell was effusive of the work undertaken right across the football department from coaches to players and the strength and conditioning staff. He also thanked his hard working committee for their professional and business based approach to the club’s administration.
The night’s awards started with recognition for volunteers working through all the teams to the culmination being the Keith Beavis Trophy for Club Champion.
In a year with so much success and both senior teams being at their best it was always going to be a tight contest for the most prestigious award.
Once again, five time winner Jack Collings polled strongly while Tiger ruckman Jamie Ivers had his best season, but the 2024 Club Champion was taken out by Beau Harris who took the Tigers year by storm with his skills, pace and pressure in the midfield. Harris was a very popular winner in his first year with the club. He gave a wonderful acceptance speech and to the delight of all the Tiger faithful gave out a call to arms to do it all again in 2025.
Jamie Ivers was a very popular winner of the Andrew Housego Runner Up Best and Fairest while Jack Collings took out Third Best and Fairest.
Coaches Jack Gartlan and Jeremy Watts both gave emotional accounts of their first season as senior coaches reflecting on how well they had worked together and enjoyed their time. They paid tribute to Assistant Coaches Tony Lynn and Sean Doolan. Tony has brought an abundance of experience and presence to the group while Sean’s analytical skills are second to none for a club at this level.
In other awards for the Seniors the three power forwards for the club all received recognition with Zac Quin winning his third Mick Nolan Player’s Player Award after kicking 81 goals for the season and winning the League Goal Kicking Award.
Ryan Doolan took out the Coaches Award for his stellar season where he also kicked 66 goals after missing several games with a broken cheekbone.
Former Club Champion and Club Captain Zac McLean capped off another wonderful season with his second Most Consistent Award on top of his Best on Ground Grand Final performance.
Danny Craven presented the Everton Award as a joint Life Member of the Mayne Tigers and Everton Wolves. He reflected on the importance of this award with so many names on the trophy who have gone on to play an important role in the Tigers success. The Award recognises local talent who are the stars of the future. He made the wonderful observation that twelve players in the senior premiership team were either Everton or Mayne Juniors. Seven from Everton and five from Mayne in a very positive sign of the player pathway. The winner this year was former Mayne Junior Digby Morison.
Former Everton Junior James Stolz was awarded the Best Team Player for his excellence in his role in the Tigers impenetrable defence. He has shown remarkable improvement every year and is now one of the leaders in the Tigers men’s department which has had a very strong tradition particularly over the last fifteen years.
Former Mayne Junior Eddie Mallan was the very popular winner of the Best in Finals. Eddie returned to the Tigers this year to help the club win a premiership in the centenary year and he proved to be a very important cog in the Tigers success. The Mallan name is synonymous with the Mayne Tigers and now Eddie continues that tradition in wonderful style. In great news he has agreed to play on for another season.
Tim Lyons took out the Graham Walters Best and Fairest in the Reserve Grade, Molly Nelson was the Glenda Barber Best and Fairest Winner in the Women's team and Jordan Cabot was the John Laing Best and Fairest Winner in the Third Grade.
In the Volunteer section, Gus Shaw and Daniel Schmidt shared the Jack Kennedy Volunteer Person of the Year while Shane Johnson and Brent McArdle were awarded Life Membership.
Details of all the awards are in this week's Tiger Rag which can be downloaded from this website.
