The Mayne Tigers put together a strong full game performance to defeat The Moreton Bay Lions by 43 points at the Den yesterday.
What a difference a week makes, with the Tigers setting a high standard from the first bounce! It took only 20 seconds for the Tigers to hit the scoreboard with Captain Zac McLean to kicking the Tigers opening goal.
The Tigers went on with dominating play throughout the first quarter with the midfield wining the majority of the contested ball, especially in the stoppages where Dan Schmidt ruckwork provided the Tigers with the first use of the ball. The mid field dominance provided plenty of opportunities for the forwards who despite the difficult breeze were able to kick another two goals for the quarter.
The Tigers started the second quarter in the same fashion, Zac Quin providing plenty of pace out of the centre bombarding the Tigers forward line. The Tigers forwards were creating issues for the Moreton Bay defense overwhelming them with their strength and attack on the ball. Ryan Doolan made the most of his opportunities kicking goals from set shots and general play, while Craig Blaschke converted a set shot from the boundary line. The Tigers midfield and defenders were combining well intercept Moreton Bay’s forward attacks , Callum Ferguson was strong in the last line of defense reading the play well and taking some timely marks. When the half time siren sounded the Tigers were ahead seven goals to three.
Not surprisingly, Moreton Bay lifted their intensity for the start of the third quarter, The Tigers were able to absorb this and only allowed one goal. The Tigers adjusted their game style to maintain possession and composure. Casey Barber lifted his work rate and was a key contributor in the Tigers maintaining their control of the game and was rewarded with a goal from a one hundred meter penalty. The quarter ended with Ryan Doolan taking a strong contested mark and kicking a goal to signal the Tigers dominance.
The final quarter featured some slick forward work with Captain Zac Mclean kicking a goal within the first minute. The Tigers then capitalized on the restart to kick another goal via Ryan Doolan. The tiges continued to dominate around the field , Lois Quin continued his fine form as a high defender. The Tigers were relentless in their pressure kicking goals from set shots and open play. While Moreton Bay were able to kick two quick goals, The Tigers dominance was too strong.
The Tigers travel to Springwood next week.
