Mayne Football Club

Mayne AFC

Vale Des Grummitt

The Mayne Football club would like to acknowledge the passing of one of their favourite sons from an iconic Tiger Family.

Des Grummitt, the eldest of the Grummitt boys passed away yesterday aged 75 after a twelve month battle with bowel cancer.

Des was born in 1949 so he grew up in a golden era for the Mayne Tigers where the club was rarely out of the finals race at junior or senior level. He played a lot of footy with the likes of Paul Meakin, Rod Judd, Peter Cubis, Tyrone Stewart, Alan Hayes and Graham McColm just to mention a few of the Tiger greats of his cohort.

Des was the eldest of five children with his sister Gay being in the middle of four brothers. Des went to Pinkinba State School where they played Aussie rules so it was Des who lead all his brothers into playing football at Mayne. Des was about 14 when he started at Mayne with his brothers Gil, Rob and finally Neil following on to forge great careers in the Black and Gold.

There will be plenty of old Tigers who will remember the Grummitt family with father Merv always involved driving many boys to games over the extended period that the boys played in the juniors. It was the era of the Grummitts, the Stewarts and the Melits that stocked junior teams with abundant talent. All the Grummitt boys excelled and their exploits are recorded significantly in Tiger history. Brothers Gil and Rob were inducted into the Mayne Tigers Hall of Fame this year for their service to the club on and off the field.

Des played senior football at Mayne at both ends of the ground, but it was his natural skills in sailing that lead him to pursue a very successful career on the water. Des represented the State and Country on many occasions as a very capable sailor.

Des will be laid to rest privately but a celebration of his life will be held in Cairns on the 26th August 2024 where he spent most of his life.

The Mayne Football Club would like to express their deepest sympathy to the Grummitt family and their friends on this sad occasion.
