Mayne Football Club

Mayne AFC

Vale Peter Cubis

The Mayne Football Club recognises the passing of one of their most loved and talented players, Peter Cubis, who passed away this morning. He was recognised in the Mayne Tigers inaugural Hall of Fame in 2024 for his efforts in winning the 1968 Clem Ryan Medal but he was so much more to the Mayne Tigers and Banyo Bloods Football Clubs and all those who played with him and had the pleasure of knowing him.

The following beautiful tribute has been written by his lifelong mate Rod Judd.

Hi all Bloods and Tigers, sadly I have to advise that Peter Cubis (Cubo) Banyo Club Legend, Life Member and Mayne Hall of Famer passed away at 6:30AM today Tuesday 25 November 2025.

Peter had been in various hospitals and health centres etc since 12 June this year. His hard battle is over and he can now rest in peace. He will be greatly missed by his family and so many people who knew him. We were best mates since meeting at Ascot State School in August 1961 and I had no idea at the time it was the beginning of a lifelong friendship which resulted ( among many other great things ) in my involvement with Mayne and then Banyo. Suffice to say that I am grateful we met then and maintained our brotherly relationship which can't be taken away, RIP my brother .

Cubo was an extremely talented all round sportsman and footballer and when he came to Brisbane from Tenterfield NSW in 1961 he attended Ascot State School as I said above. As a result of that he commenced his Junior career at Mayne playing in Junior premierships and then coaching Junior teams and premierships along the way.

Peter was a brilliant stab pass and very accurate kick for goal, very quick and confident on both sides of his body. Our U17 and Colts coach at Mayne Keith Watson didn't hand out compliments easily but down the track he said to me that Peter was the closest player he saw to Jason Akermanis, high praise indeed. Cubo represented Queensland in the U17 team of 1967 and was judged best on the ground against NSW that year. In 1968 he won The Clem Ryan Medal for the best and fairest player in the Colts (U19) QAFL Competition with a record 35 votes. Peter played 50 plus games for Mayne A Grade between 1968 and 1970 as well as many Reserve Grade games up to and including 1971. Peter had some stiff opposition in the senior ranks at the time when Mayne had some star rovers ( as they were called then ) including the odd import. He had an impressive record at The Tigers. Peter's induction into The Mayne Hall of Fame in the hundredth year of the club in 2024 was a very proud moment for him.

In 1972 Cubo was approached to Captain Coach Banyo and he accepted. This began a successful career at Banyo winning the Premiership in his first year which he followed up with another Premiership in 1973. He also won another premiership as Captain Coach of the 1980 Reserve Grade Banyo team. Three premierships as captain coach is testament to his ability to lead and get the best out of his players, a nice record to have.

He also coached Junior teams at Banyo, was Senior Club President at a young age and was pretty much a constant on the Senior Committee for a number of years.

Peter received a coveted Red Club Blazer and Life Membership along the way in recognition of his magnificent dedication to the club. CUBO WILL BE REMEMBERED AS A TRUE BANYO BLOOD AND CLUB LEGEND, RIP BROTHER.

Sincere condolences to Michelle, Michael and families. I will post arrangements when they become available.

Hoping to see as many as possible at the Creek on Saturday 6 December for the Annual Banyo Bloods Reunion. UP THE BLOODS.

The Mayne Football Club also wishes to pass on their collective sympathy to Peter's family at this sad time.
